Mission Sunday

Mission with Vision

Isaiah 45:1,4-6
1 Thessalonians 1:1-5
Mathew 10:1-9

Dear friends in Christ Jesus! How are you all?
Today as we celebrate the mission Sunday I ask you a little question. Why do we celebrate the mission Sunday? Among the fifty two Sundays of the year one of the Sundays is dedicated to mission. What is the meaning of mission?

The word "mission" originates from the Latin missionem which means «the act of sending” in the bible Jesus sends his disciples to preach in his name. Thus one who preaches the good news in the name of Jesus called as a missionary. And the mission Sunday reminds us to reflect on the lives of the missionaries and their sacrifice for the good news of Lord.

During the time of Jesus there were several movements. For example, the movement of John the Baptist, the movement of the Pharisees and scribes etc and these movements formed a community and they too had their own disciples. (Jn 1, 35; Lk 11, 1; Acts 19, 3) and they had their own missionaries (Mt 23, 25). But there was a great difference! For example The Pharisees, when they went on mission, they went with a preparation. They thought that they could not eat what the people would offer them, because the food was not always ritually “pure”. For this reason, they took with them purses and money in order to take care of their own food. Thus, instead of working toward overcoming the divisions, these observances of the Law of purity weakened even more the living out of community values.

Hence the proposal of Jesus is different to his disciples. Jesus tries to rescue the community values which had been suffocated, and tries to renew and to re-organize the communities in such a way that they could, once again, be an expression of the Covenant, a sign of the Kingdom of God. And this is what is said to us in today’s Gospel which describes the sending out of the 72 disciples: Luke 10, 1: The Mission:
Jesus sends the disciples to places where he himself has to go. The disciple is the spokesperson of Jesus. He is not the owner of the Good News. Jesus sends the disciples in pairs, two by two. That is useful for mutual help, because the mission is not individual, but rather communitarian. Two persons represent the community better than only one.

Luke 10, 2-3: Co-responsibility:
The first task of the mission Sunday to faithful is that of praying to God to send many missionaries. Every disciple – man and woman – has to feel responsible for the mission. And thus has to pray to the Father to send workers to continue the mission.

Why do we need to pray for the Missionaries?
Because Jesus sends his disciples “as a sheep among the wolves”. The mission of Christ is a difficult and dangerous task. Because the system in which the apostles lived was contrary to the teaching to the kingdom values. Even today it continues to be the same. In the history of the church we find that usually the missionaries leave their own comfort zone just for the sake of the kingdom of God. Because they are missionaries many of them were killed brutally just for the kingdom values.

There was a beautiful family living in a village. After the marriage the couple did not get any child. They went hospitals after the hospitals, church after the church with fasting and praying just to get a child. One day they prayed to God saying, “Lord if you give us child surely we will send him to priesthood” and this was their daily prayer. With the blessing of God within a year the wife was conceived and bore a son. As the parents have promised to the Lord they decided to offer their first born to the Lord.

The days rolled by. Every now and then the parents used to tell to their child that you must become a priest but this boy does not bother the words of the parents. When the boy finished his education he desired to become a doctor or engineer but the parents were in difficult situation because already they had promised to the lord that they will offer their son to priesthood. The parents were earnestly praying to God for their son’s conversion to give the desire to priesthood. One day after the family prayer the parents asked the boy what do you want to become. The boy promptly replied I want to be missionary. I want to become priest. The parents were overwhelmed with joy and thanked the lord for this grace.

The boy joined the priesthood and studied for fourteen years and he became a priest. Immediately after the priesthood he decided to become a missionary. As we know when we do something good for the Lord the Satan will bring many troubles on our way. In the same way when the priest told that he wants to become a missionary next day his mother fell down and got big injury and admitted in the hospital and the doctors advised her not to walk. After two months his brother’s family along with the children met with an accident, and next week of the following his sister’s husband met with major accident and admitted in the hospital and till now he is bed ridden. By seeing all this accidents and sicknesses many of the relatives told to the priest to drop the idea of missionary and to take care of the family members. But the priest’s parents called their son and courageously told him that “my dear son we will take care of our family, you go and take care of God’s family. When you take care of the God’s people and his family surely God will take care of us”. With this motivation the priest came to mission land.

When the priest entered the mission land there were great challenges waiting for him. In the mission the language is new, the people are new, the culture is different, the food system is different, the climate and the weather condition is totally changed, just for the sake of the kingdom values this priest sacrifices his own comfort zones. In the same way just for the sake of Gospel values and to preach the Good news of the Lord every missionary sacrifices his or her own comfort zones. Dear friends now it is our time to pray for these missionaries.

Today Jesus sends his 72 disciples to a mission with a vision. In this gospel text we find four community values:
01. Luke 10, 4-6: the first Value is Hospitality.
Contrary to the other missionaries of Pharisees and scribes, the disciples of Jesus – men and women – cannot take anything with them; neither purse, nor sandals but he can take only the peace of Christ. That means that they have to trust in the hospitality of the people. Because the disciple, who goes without anything, taking only peace, shows that he/she trusts the people. The disciple thinks that he/she will be received, respected wherever he goes. And Jesus also tells that greet no one on the road, which means that no time should be lost in things which do not belong to the mission.

02. Luke 10, 7: the second value is Sharing.
Jesus tells the disciples that they should not go from house to house, but they should remain in the same house. That is to say, they should live together with the people in a stable way; participate in their life situations, working with them and exchanging their joys and sorrows. Thus Jesus affirms that the labourer deserves his wages. Therefore do not move house after the house. Thus Jesus introduces the new model of living together.

03. Luke 10, 8: the third value eating together with the same table.
The disciples should eat whatever the people offer them. That means the disciples cannot live separately and eating separate food rather he/ she must sit around the table along with the family members and together they must share the food. Because the Pharisees were preparing the food separately and they were eating for the sake of purity of the food but Jesus insists that the purity depends on the heart not on the food. If the people accept the missionaries and the missionaries accept the people then their heart becomes pure and they have to the intimacy with God.

04. Luke 10, 9a: the fourth value is The Acceptance of the excluded.
The disciples should cure those who are sick, cure the lepers and cast out the devils (Mt 10, 8). Because those days when the people are affected with major sickness or possessed by devil they will be send out of the family. And the sick people were not cared by their own family members. Thus Jesus gives the new teaching that everyone must live together no one should the excluded from the community.

Luke 10, 9b: The coming of the Kingdom.
If all these requirements are respected, and followed the disciples should cry out in the four directions: The Kingdom of God is here! Because the Kingdom of God is a new way of living and of living together with others, according to the Good News which Jesus has come to reveal to us. God is Father and we are all brothers and sisters.

Our holy father Francis beautifully tells in the message to mission Sunday is that by nature our Catholic church is a missionary. When the church itself a missionary then every faithful who belong to this Church also must be a missionary. And the year 2018 is announced as a year of youth. And pope addresses the youth saying “you are the hope of the mission”. Which means, today’s youth are hope of the future church and future mission.

Finally pope addresses every one that let us draw inspiration from Mary, the Mother of Evangelization. She was moved by the Holy Spirit, and she welcomed the Word of life in the depths of her humble faith. She was a first missionary taking the good news of the lord to different places. In the same way it is the responsibility of every parent to teach and instruct your children to become a missionary. May the Virgin Mother help us to say our own “yes”, conscious of the urgent need to make the Good News of Jesus resound in our time! May she obtain for us renewed zeal in bringing to everyone the Good News of the life that is victorious over death! May she intercede for us so that we can acquire the holy audacity needed to discover new ways to bring the gift of salvation to every man and woman!
