Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The chosen people are Wise or Foolish or Lazy

Isaiah 25: 6-10
Philippines 4:12-14, 19-20
Mathew 22:1-14

Dear friends in Christ Jesus! How are you all?
Are we wise people or Foolish people? Today all three readings invite us to reflect upon our own life. Dear friends in the first letter to Corinthians St. Paul say that God has chosen the weak, the foolish in order to shame the strong and wise. Thus God does not call the qualified but he calls the unqualified and qualifies them. Today many people are called by God but only few are chosen even among the chosen people only countable people are qualified by God Himself.

In today’s Gospel we come across two parables. One is the parable of the wedding feast and the second is parable of the Wedding Garment. The parable of the wedding feast is common to both the Gospel of Luke and Mathew. But the wedding garment is unique to only Mathew. Dear friends in the Gospel the king arranges wedding feast to his son. Thus he invites all the notable person in that city. But for the surprise of the king all the invitees are refused to come to wedding feast. Thus the king himself says to his servants that the wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. ‘Go therefore to the main roads, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.’

In the same way the slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests. Thus the king and servants are happy. Now to visit the guests the king comes to the wedding hall and founds everyone is with wedding garments except the one man. The king goes near to the man and asks ‘Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?’ And the man was speechless. «Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind his hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Dear friends my question is that the act of king is right or wrong? Or why the king asked the servants to ‘Bind his hands and foot and throw him into the outer darkness? Anybody wants to answer?

Dear friends when we look back into the ceremony of Jewish wedding we find so many important elements.
01. Wedding dress is sign of unity
Firstly wedding dress is sign of unity. According to the Jewish custom the wedding bring people into common. When people gather in common there will be rich, Notables, Dignitaries, VVIP, poor, widows etc. when these people come with different dress it will bring superiority among them. So people have decided that for the wedding they need to come with common wedding dress. When they wear common dress there will be no superiority rather there will be unity. Thus the wedding garment brings the sign of unity among the people.

02. The King’s Greatest Gift
Normally for the wedding feast people will come with wedding dress; but in this wedding the invites are refused to come. So the people in the wedding hall are poor, lame, widows, good and evil people. And for this people there will be no wedding dress to participate in the feast of the king. When they come for the wedding feast there will be disunity among them. So the king thought of these poor people and ordered the servants to give costly wedding dress to all the people. Because these poor people listened to the voice of the King and as a sign of obedient to the words of the king he wanted to offer wedding dress to all the people as a sign of unity. All the people received with rich wedding dress expect the one man.

02. The Concern of King
Normally welcoming ceremony is very very important to every culture. In the same way for the wedding feast of the king’s family surely he might have appointed some important person to invite the guests. Here the king does not show his power and majesty but he himself comes down to the wedding hall and invites the people with whole heartedly, also he monitors that everyone is properly cared or not.

At this juncture the king notices that everyone is dressed with wedding dress except the one man. So the king with his simplicity and humility goes near to that person and asks my dear friend how did you come in here without wedding clothes?’ because this man is foolish and lazy and he does not want to wear the wedding dress.

Thus he commits three mistakes.
1. Firstly though the servants gave the wedding dress to this man but he does not want to wear them thus he brings disunity among the people.
2. Secondly this man refuses to receive the king’s gift.
3. Thirdly the king considers this man as a friend and asks the question Friend how did you come in? But this man does not want to accept the king as a friend and refuses to answer the king. Thus the king was angry with this man.

Dear friends why did the king order the servants, to ‘Bind his hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness?

In the beginning the king sends invitation to all the important and chosen people but they refused to come to the wedding feast. And again the king sends his servants to invite the guests but they did not mind the words of the king and one went to his farm to work, the other went to his business and the other sized the servants and mistreated them and finally killed them. Thus the king was enraged and killed the murderers and fired the whole city. Hence when the city was set in fire the people in that city were weeping and gnashing their teeth. Now this man is also considered as equal to that people. So king ordered the servants to bind his hands and feet to throw into the same streets where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Dear friends in the story who is the king?
The king is non-other than our God himself.
What is the wedding feast?
The weeding feast is the last supper of Jesus.
Who are all the invitees?
The invitees are Christians like you and me.
Which is the wedding invitation?
The sacraments of the church are the invitations.
Dear friends as the king called the guests in the Gospel, every day through the priest God is inviting the faithful to participate in the holy Sacraments. But how many people worthily participate in it? For example so many times I have informed you all to come inside the church to visit the Blessed Sacrament, Either before the mass or after the mass. But many people come to church, without preparation they receive the Holy Communion, and always sit outside the church and participate in the mass and they never entered the church to visit the Blessed Sacrament. Hence the people who do not listen to the words of the priests are like the person in the gospel having without wedding dress. The man was invited to the wedding feast but he did not listen to the king’s words and he does not have good preparation thus he was thrown in to the place where it was weeping and gnashing of the teeth. In the same way if faithful refuse to listen to the words of God surely we too will be thrown into the place of weeping and gnashing of teeth.

But on the contrary if people listen to the words of God surely they will participate in the banquet of God which we read in the first reading of today. The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples who will listen to his words. Dear friends we may say that it will be difficult for us to follow the words of God. That’s why in the second reading St. Paul beautifully says us that “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me”. Yes dear friend if we listen to God’s word surely he will empower us. If he empowers us surely we can participate in the banquet of God. If we participate in the banquet of God thus we become a channel of God’s blessings.

Today let us analyze ourselves; are we all called by God? If we are called by God what is our response? Do we listen to the words of God through priests? And do we participate in the holy sacraments with right preparation? If we liten to God then we are wise people but if we do not listen we are equal the foolish and lazy persons.
