Passion or Palm Sunday

Voices of ……Hosanna or Crucify Him!

IS 50: 4-7
PHIL 2: 6-11
LK: 22: 14-23 - 23: 56

Dear Sisters, Brothers and Children,
I welcome you into this Holy week. Our involvement in the Passion, Death and the Resurrection of Jesus may strengthen our faith and enhance our spirit to live through the painful moments of our life like Jesus of Calvary. This Sunday is a special and unique Sunday as it is called Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday. We shall make extra time to read the passion narratives to understand the richness in all the liturgies of this sacred week.

The liturgy of today has deep meaning a profound message so there is no need of homily than reflection. This week is the important week in every Christian life. This day sets the tone for the rest of the week happenings and liturgical services. Today, we have the following things before us: The blessings of the Palms, procession with joyful acclamation of Hosanna and reading from the passion narrative. We have following characters in the passion narrative: Chief priests, Scribes, Pilate and Herod whose history did not survive or continue as they were against Jesus. On the other side, history of disciples and crowd and their life is being continued today. We are going to re-live the history this week; we may ask ourselves where we are today! Among all these we take disciples and the crowed for today’s reflection. The voice of crowd was momentary, it was wavering and it was superficial. It shows the uncertain, indecisive and insincere attitude of them. We may call them as people of two-face or people of two minds. The reason is not fear of authority or pleasing the authority, but they did not want to decide and prefer to play a safe game. Hosanna is the Greek word comes from Hebrew and spoken in Aramaic. Hosanna means save us, some places it refers to save us now. The voice of save us changed in to crucify him. It reveals their momentary and insincere attitude. The confused disciples and Peter who denied, though stumbling and struggling yet they were sincere and committed. They passed this journey with Jesus, so their History continuous in us and by us.

“Either give up Christ or give up your jobs.” Constantine the Great was the first Christian Roman emperor. His father Constantius I who succeeded Diocletian as emperor in 305 A.D. was a pagan with a soft heart for Christians. When he ascended the throne, he discovered that many Christians held important jobs in the government and in the court. So he issued an executive order to all those Christians: “Either give up Christ or give up your jobs.” The great majority of Christians gave up their jobs rather than disowning Christ. Only a few cowards gave up their religion rather than lose their jobs. The emperor was pleased with the majority who showed the courage of their convictions and gave their jobs back to them saying: "If you will not be true to your God you will not be true to me either.” We may come out of our two faces and two minds attitude and journey with Jesus of hope, life and goodness closely-Amen
