02ndSunday of Ordinary

The Hour has come…….

Isa62:1-5
1Cor12:4-11
Jn2:1-11

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ Jesus I welcome you once again to a new week to renew God’s call in our life. We are in the ordinary time of the Liturgical year after the season of Christmas. It is a new season and new moment, where we are invited to consider every hour and day as blessing and goodness of God. We may recognize and celebrate it with fuller involvement and participation.

Mr. Jim told me that his only worry at the age of 78 is the lack of religiousness of his son and not going to Catholic Church in particular. I asked him whether did he make any efforts, he said whenever he asked him why don’t you go to Church, you have stopped, it is you who have to re-start your Catholic faith, for this, the immediate response and answer of his son was “my hour has not yet come”.

My hour has not yet come to go for confession… My hour has not yet come to finish my graduation studies… My hour has not yet come to quit smoking…My hour has not yet come to stop gambling…My hour has not yet come to get married….my hour has not yet come to repair my repair my relationship…my hour has not yet come to visit doctor for check-up…my hour has not yet come to do charity work…!

When the hour will come to do these things or to stop doing certain things? The hour will not come because it is an excuse we give for not taking effort, for not stopping a habit, for not healing a broken relationship and for not changing our life-style. We give excuse and reason saying this is not my hour or time to do or to stop doing things. In other words I don’t want or I am scared or I hesitate to think of this. Today’s readings teach us that every moment and hour is good and special if we act on it.

John speaks of 7signs or moments of manifestation of Jesus in his gospel. Wedding at Cana was the first sign or hour of revelation. It is a distant family wedding of Mary’s family. Marriage was celebrated for seven days those days. People keep visiting seven days, so water, bread and wine were there always in plenty. Lacking of anything is a humiliation to the family especially for bride and bridegroom. Mother Mary who was sensitive to the need of the situation and knew the power and greatness of Jesus tell Him, it is your time, Jesus hesitates and avoids with doubts, “my hour has not yet come” but after seeing the call of Mother he asks them fill jars with water and reveals the hour of glory and abundance.

In the first reading, People of Israel were in despair and desolate situation not willing to go back to Jerusalem. They refused the call of Persian emperor in 578B.C who was ready to rebuild and restore Jerusalem after their Babylonian exile and destruction. But, they see only ruins and destruction of walls of Jerusalem and the temples. God tells them through Prophet Isaiah that the hour has come and this is the hour of delight and joy. He tells them Jerusalem is no more a place of desolate and forsaken rather it is God’s delight and joy. Even the gentiles who did not Believe and accept the sacredness of Jerusalem will turn back as a hope and delight because the hour has come, do realize this is the hour to turn back and walk towards Jerusalem.

Carlos G. Valle’s tells a following story in his book “In Praise of daily life”, John had bought an expensive dress wrapped as attractive parcel and gave to her on her birthday. He also asked her to wear it; she said she will wait for the good occasion and the proper hour. She brought it when we went to Europe but did not wear it saying the proper hour and good time had not yet come, she carried it when we visited holy land she did not wear it, she wanted to wear on various family occasions but she always said, the proper hour and the good time had not yet come, it went on like 9years, on a unfortunate day she passed out and died of massive cardiac arrest. John with heavy heart filled with sadness said the hour has come for her to wear this dress after nine years to be dressed for funeral. Author says that, never, never in your life keep anything for special hour and good occasion, because every day you live is a special occasion, good time and precious hour.

Let us, “invite Jesus and Mary to remain with us in our homes.” St. John Mary Vianney suggests this as the solution for many of our family problems. He used to encourage parents to create an atmosphere of prayer, Bible-reading, mutual love and respect and sacrificial service at home so that the presence of Jesus and Mary might be perpetually enhanced and experienced in the family. Mother Mary was present at the first hour of manifestation at Can and last hours of manifestation at the last supper and Calvary. She will reveal that hour for us too.

Presence of Jesus and Mary will make the hour special, precious and good. We shall begin now.
Hour has come to turn to God…hour has come to involve in Church and charity activities..
Hour has come to repair the broken relationship….hour has come to make decision..

Hour has come to complete studies….hour has come to hold on to Jesus and Mother Mary of Cana in our family prayer…because when we are in their presence every hour and day is good, precious and special…-Amen.
